Find out about the exciting topics that accompanied the MaterialDigital initiative in spring and what awaits us in summer and late summer. We are particularly looking forward to the upcoming MaterialDigital General Assembly in September and our participation at the MSE, where the initiative will provide important impulses as part of Topic D: Digital Transformation.

The program for this year's General Assembly has been finalized and registration for the event is open now. Make sure you get the Early Bird price until the end of July - the regular price will apply from August. Don't forget to register before your summer vacation, as the registration period ends on August 31.

Our initiative is becoming increasingly international. For this reason, the event will primarily be held in English this year.
If you have any questions about the event, please contact the community team or the executive office. We will do everything we can to ensure that you have an enjoyable event.
Only one week after the plenary session, the MaterialDigital initiative will meet again at MSE 2024. Together with the NFDI-MatWerk consortium, we are organizing the symposium "Digital Materials: Experiments, simulation workflows, ontologies, and interoperability" (D03) and look forward to an active exchange at our joint stand.
Numerous MaterialDigital projects and the Core Team will be represented with presentations at Symposium D03.
Until October, we will be presenting a new format at the monthly community meeting: a series of short presentations that provide a comprehensive overview of the MaterialDigital projects. The MaterialDigital2 projects DaMaStE and AnAttAl kicked off the short presentations. A big thank you for these interesting insights.
The basis for the short presentations is a questionnaire that the MaterialDigital platform sends out to the projects in advance. The projects complete the questionnaire and information is then extracted for a profile with which the respective project introduces itself at the community meeting.
The aim of the presentations and profiles is to intensify the exchange between the projects and promote synergies and cooperation. In order to ensure a sustainable transfer of knowledge, both the short profile and the detailed questionnaire will be published on the respective project website.
We cordially invite all project partners and interested parties to the community meetings and look forward to a lively exchange and inspiring discussions.
In May, the subgroup dedicated to FEM and continuum scale simulation was reactivated. Projects from both the MaterialDigital Phase 1 and Phase 2 projects are actively participating. Various use cases are currently being analyzed in order to assess their potential for generally applicable workflow concepts. Other interested parties who use FEM or continuum scale simulations in their projects are very welcome.
At MaterialsWeek 2024 in Cyprus, workflows were a central topic of several presentations. The contributions around this topic show that the modular orientation and publication of workflows, as carried out in the MaterialDigital initiative, is an important contribution to the community. The presentation by PMD included a presentation of the platform's workflow activities in a European context.
The workflow group will also be represented at the MSE in Darmstadt with various contributions, including an overview presentation on the working group, a presentation on multiscale workflows, a poster on the PMD WorkflowStore and other thematic presentations. We are looking forward to the joint discussion in the symposia and to seeing the MaterialDigital projects there.
Finally, the bi-weekly jour fixe (currently changed rhythm!) of the Workflows working group has started the presentation of the MaterialDigital projects of the second phase. All projects are invited to present themselves at the Jour fixe in order to coordinate the possibilities for interaction with the platform in the area of workflows. External guests are also welcome to get involved and discuss opportunities for cooperation.
A new Show & Tell series in the Ontology Playground with the MaterialDigital2 projects is being planned and should start soon. An ongoing topic is and remains the creation of the BFO2020-compatible PMDco v3.0 and its usability. We cordially invite you to subscribe to our e-mail distribution list to participate in our bi-weekly interactive exchange format on ontology usage and modeling.
Preparations are also underway for a second hackathon on the transition from PMDco version 2.0.7 to the BFO-compatible PMDco version 3.0.
Two new publications have also emerged from the Semantic Interoperability work area:
Semantic integration of diverse data in materials science: Assessing Orowan strengthening in the journal Scientific Data, clearly shows how data from different sources can be interoperably linked using an ontological framework. The notebook developed for this purpose makes it possible to retrace all the steps.
FAIR and Structured Data: A Domain Ontology Aligned with Standard-Compliant Tensile Testing, published in the Advanced Engineering Materials Journal and part of the Special Issue, presents our well-known tensile test ontology, its development and application in a clear and detailed manner.
The contents of the publications were presented at the TMS Specialty Congress 2024 which took place from June 16 to 20, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio (USA). The congress focused on various materials science topics such as artificial intelligence, digital robotic shaping and mechanical behavior of materials. Markus Schilling and Bernd Bayerlein gave the following presentations:

"Adapting FAIR Practices in Materials Science: Digital Representation of Material-specific Characterization Methods"
At the TMS Specialty Congress 2024, the "PMD Core Ontology: Building Bridges at the Mid-level - A Community Effort for Achieving Semantic Interoperability in Materials Science" was also presented with a poster.
Once a month, the department organizes an Open Architecture Meeting where interested parties from the MaterialDigital project teams can work on infrastructure challenges, e.g. when setting up their own PMD server (PMD-S). Feel free to attend if you would like to share your experiences or have any questions. You can register via the contact form on our website.
The Deployment Guide has been updated and now also contains instructions for integrating the PMD-Mesh.
As already mentioned in the last newsletter, a special issue is being prepared in the journal Advanced Engineering Materials as part of the MaterialDigital initiative. The list of publications for this special issue is growing steadily. We would like to thank the authors for their extensive thinking and writing work.
We are pleased that the extensive work of the MaterialDigital1 projects and the Core Team since the start five years ago will soon be bundled and clearly presented in the form of a Special Issue. We are proud of this achievement and wish everyone exciting insights into the work published to date:

The NFDI-MatWerk consortium develops research data infrastructure for materials science and engineering. To this end, the consortium is surveying the needs for such an infrastructure in the materials science and engineering community for the second time. This year's QI-Digital Forum is entitled "AI Act, Data Spaces and Digital Product Passport - Setting the course for a green and digital transition". The QI-Digital initiative is shaping the quality assurance of the future. The year 2024 holds some key developments in store for the quality infrastructure (QI): The EU adopts the AI Act, the Digital Product Passport takes shape and more and more European data room concepts promise secure digital ecosystems. The transformation requires a large number of players, initiatives and instruments to be brought together.
We are delighted to have been invited to participate as the MaterialDigital initiative. As last year, we will be on site with a stand on both days as a meeting point for exchange and networking.

We would like to draw your attention to an introductory book on the subject of 'Materials Data Science' by Stefan Sandfeld. It is aimed at anyone who has not yet come into contact with machine learning and data science or would like to deepen their knowledge. What is special is that all ML/DL methods are explained and implemented in detail. There are numerous Python examples, many of which are directly relevant to materials science or physics.
You can obtain the book "Materials Data Science - Introduction to Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Data-Driven Predictions for Materials Science and Engineering" from Springer. Of course, there is also a website for the book and code examples for machine learning.
ACHEMA, the leading international trade fair for the process industry, took place in Frankfurt from June 10 to 14. The MaterialDigital platform was represented there at the stand of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Together with the project management agency VDI-TZ, the MaterialsHub MaterialNeutral and the national contact point for the EU project Horizon Europe, the MaterialDigital platform and the MaterialDigital project DigitBatMat represented the BMBF's materials science funding programs.
On Tuesday, the MaterialDigtial initiative was also a guest at the Siemens Digital Innovation Stage. After an introductory presentation by PMD Managing Director Alexander Straumal, Miriam Eisenbart for KupferDigital, Vincent Nebel for DigiBatMat and DaMaStE and Alexander Seidel for SensoTwin presented the results of their MaterialDigital projects.
