Dear colleagues in the MaterialDigital community,
We are very pleased to present you the tenth newsletter of the MaterialDigital platform! As always, the newsletter contains interesting facts and current information about the platform. An important message in advance: For all MaterialDigital participants, PMD will hold a hybrid plenary meeting on November 03, 2022 in Berlin or virtually via WebEx. Interested parties are welcome to attend as well.
The Platform MaterialDigital (PMD) starts with great pleasure into the second funding period starting October 2022. A big thank you to the BMBF and the VDI-TZ, our project sponsor, for 3 more years of funding and support!
The PMD team would also like to thank everyone involved for the first exciting and educational funding period, in which structures, ideas and approaches to digitizing materials via FAIR datasets were discussed and developed together.
Motivated, we start with our community, the funded project teams and of course our core team towards industrial application (2nd round of funded projects) and the goal of making the platform permanent. We are also pleased about the greater participation of the Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, FIZ Karlsruhe, which is now involved in the consortium as a partner institute.
Furthermore, we are very happy about the support and the great interest of our community, without which this project could not work!
For all participants within MaterialDigital, PMD will conduct a hybrid plenary meeting on November 03, 2022 in Berlin or virtually via WebEx. Interested parties are welcome to attend as well. The on-site event will take place at the premises of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin Lichterfelde.
Registration for on-site places is still possible until October 27 with reservations, virtually there are no restrictions on participation (the first part of the event/morning will be broadcast digitally). Please register.
The event is divided into three blocks: in the first block we will review 3 years of PMD and present the results so far in general. In the second block, our four fields of action will present highlights of their activities, which can be briefly discussed. The third block is dedicated to getting to know each other personally and networking on site; both the PMD fields of action and the academically led projects will introduce themselves and are looking forward to an exchange. The event language is primarily German, discussions and project presentations are of course also possible in English.
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will host the "MatFo2022" conference on November 14 and 15 under the motto "From Material to Innovation: Digital, Neutral, Vital". The conference is the meeting point for all stakeholders in materials research and will take place digitally this year. We are looking forward to numerous presentations and talks of the projects on November 14 starting at 16:45 and the PMD talk by Mr. Gumbsch on November 15 at 9:05. The detailed program as well as the possibility to register can be found on the event page.
The conference will focus on success stories from the funding areas of digitization, sustainability and biologization, as well as how to deal with future challenges. Announced are high-profile keynote and technical presentations as well as interactive formats for exchange with leading figures from research, business and politics. Topics include: digital tools and standards in materials research, current product and process innovations, materials innovations in major application fields such as energy, transport, medicine and construction, and new initiatives for the sustainable and efficient use of resources. There will also be opportunities for exchange and networking in the specialist community in the form of interactive workshops or question and answer sessions with representatives from various specialist areas and industries.
In the future, the MaterialDigital platform will cooperate very closely with the NFDI-MatWerk consortium within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). The first event where both initiatives participated together, MSE2022, was a great success. We would like to build on this and expand synergies. Our visions for materials science and engineering go hand in hand and can definitely and optimally be pursued together (even if there are different focal points). We look forward to working together!
This year's ACHEMA in Frankfurt took place from August 22, - 26, 2022 under the motto "Inspiring Sustainable Connections". PMD was represented at the BMBF booth. With our presentation "A Primer for Digitalization in Materials Science and Engineering" the platform opened the lectures around the topic of digitalization. On site, we were able to have interesting conversations and exchange ideas. The academically led projects participated with a short presentation, some of the projects also showed demonstrators and contributed with talks. We have linked the prepared materials provided to us on the project pages.
On September 12, 2022, Plattform Industrie 4.0 and Gaia-X Hub Germany hosted a Data Space Industrie 4.0 pitch day in Frankfurt/M., to which PMD was selected after an application process. Two of our steering committee members represented the platform with a pitch and poster and were able to have valuable conversations.
From September 27, - 29, 2022, MSE 2022 - the most important German materials science conference - took place in Darmstadt / hybrid. In the symposium M04 Digital Materials: Experiments, Simulation Workflows, Ontologies and Interoperability, in which we played a major role in terms of organization and content, exciting talks were given that addressed the modern developments around the digitization of materials science and engineering. Other symposia highlighted further aspects of the digital transformation of this field. In the entrance area of the Audimax, MaterialDigital and NFDI-Matwerk presented themselves in a joint networking area and were available for discussions and information. We thank the numerous visitors for their interest, the diverse participations in the symposium and the DGM for the successful organization and cooperation.
In order to simplify the registration process to our site, the possibility of logging in with a local user account will be eliminated as of 01.12.2022. Users whose account is not yet linked to the MaterialDigital SSO can continue to make this link in their profile. We will also send a reminder by mail to the affected accounts before the changeover.
We hope to welcome as many of you as possible to our Plenary Meeting. Please continue to participate in the future! Without you, your feedback, and your collaboration, this community project cannot succeed.
Thank you and best regards,
The PMD team
