Dear colleagues of the MaterialDigital community,

welcome to the second newsletter of this year!

Melissa Telong

Melissa Telong is an engineer specializing in construction chemistry and physics. She has been researching sustainable building materials at BAM since 2019. Together with colleagues from the LeBeDigital team, she is working on the development of an ontology for the concrete production process chain.

Marian Bruns

Marian Bruns is a postdoctoral researcher at Max-Planck-Institute for Sustainable Materials GmbH (former „Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH“) and works in the PMD focus-area „IT-Architecture and Infrastructure“. He obtained the degree M. Sc. in physics at TU Dortmund and continued with his PhD-studies at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS), Ruhr-Universität Bochum. There, he worked on computer simulations of thermo-mechanical treatments of bulk metallic glasses and obtained a broad knowledge in both the domains of materials science and information technology.

Jörg Schaarschmidt

Jörg Schaarschmidt works in the research department for Multiscale Material Modeling and Virtual Design at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and has been actively shaping the MaterialDigital platform for 4 years. Together with Tilmann Hickel, he leads the workflow team and is part of the architecture team. After his PhD in Life Sciences at the University of Leipzig, he worked as a postdoc at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.

Dear colleagues of the MaterialDigital community,

We welcome you to the first newsletter of the year and invite you to catch up on the latest news from the MaterialDigital initiative.

Ursula Pähler

Ursula Pähler is a research assistant at the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (THD) at the Technology Campus Freyung (TCF) - Institute for Applied Computer Science & Bionics. Her Master's degree in Technology Management followed her Bachelor's degrees in Engineering Physics and Industrial Engineering. After several positions at the THD (including STEM promotion), she is now responsible for ontologies in the SensoTwin project at the TCF. At the same time, she advises companies on topics relating to digitalisation and AI in the Zukunftszentrum Süd project.

Ebrahim Norouzi

Ebrahim Norouzi is a Junior Researcher at FIZ Karlsruhe with Prof. Dr. Harald Sack. He holds an M.Sc. degree in Materials Science and Simulation from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) at the Ruhr University Bochum. After completing his master’s degree, he worked as a scientific researcher at the Materials Informatics group of Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM). Ebrahim Norouzi acquired a deep understanding of material characterization techniques from his previous work at the Max Planck Institute for Iron research.

Heike Wittek

Heike Wittek studied mechanical engineering at the Leibniz University of Hannover where she obtained her doctorate. She is deputy head of the department Processing Methodology at Deutsches Institut für Kautschuktechnologie e.V. (https://www.dikautschuk.de/) and has been helping to advance the digitalisation of rubber processing as part of the project DIGITRUBBER since 2021.

Dear colleagues of the MaterialDigital community,

Our year 2023 was full of collaborative achievements and progress as well as inspiring events, which we owe above all to the great commitment of the MaterialDigital projects and the platform's employees. We are grateful for this motivating exchange with everyone involved, which brings us closer to the initiative's common goals.

In this year's last newsletter, we would like to give you an insight into current developments, news and a glimpse of what's to come next year. We hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and wish you a successful end to the year and relaxing holidays.

Miriam Eisenbart

Miriam Eisenbart studied mechanical engineering at KIT before joining the fem Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry in Schwäbisch Gmünd as a research assistant. For the past 2.5 years, she has been coordinating the platform MaterialDigital project KupferDigital. Since May, she has been head of the newly founded department "Digitalisation and AI" at the fem.

QI-Digital Forum 2023 on Oktober, 10/11, 2023

Call for proposals for MaterialDigital 3 online!

The BMBF published the new call for proposals for industry-led consortia in the MaterialDigital funding programme on 24.05.2023. The aim is to fund projects that have a strong industrial orientation and a coverage of the entire value chain of a material. Submission of project outlines by 31 August 2023.

At the virtual information event, 15 June 23, questions can be put to the platform and the project executing organization. (Registration via events)

Lisa Beran

Lisa Beran is a bilingual theoretical physicist with a PhD from the Philipps University in Marburg. She is currently working as a researcher at the INM - Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken in the program division "Structure Formation". Within the MaterialDigital initiative, Lisa Beran has been working in the DigiBatMat project since June 2022 and will continue her work in the follow-up project DaMaStE.

NFDI-MatWerk conference 2023

The 1st NFDI-MatWerk Conference to develop a common vision of digital transformation in materials science and engineering - NFDI-MatWerk Conference 2023 - will take place from 27 - 29 June 2023 as a hybrid conference (on-site & online). MaterialDigital will be a part of it! Come and join us there!

Alexander Straumal

Since January 2023, Dr. Alexander Straumal manages the MaterialDigital platform office and coordinates the platform's development. Previously, he worked in materials science research and studied grain boundaries and grain boundary effects in polycrystalline metals.

Birgit Skrotzki

The scientist Birgit Skrotzki heads the Division Metallic High Temperature Materials at BAM and is a member of the steering committee in the project Platform MaterialDigital. Birgit Skrotzki is also currently President of the German Society for Materials Science (DGM).

The turn of the year is just around the corner and we look back on a successful year of the Platform MaterialDigital (PMD): Thank you for being part of this great community! We look forward to the upcoming growth of the initiative as well as the valuable collaboration with you in 2023!

Registration for our Plenary Meeting is open now!

The Platform MaterialDigital will hold its second (hybrid) General Assembly on November 3, 2022. This year we are guests at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin. Since the places on site are limited, we ask for registration, we will contact you after examination and send you a confirmation. The first half of the event will be broadcast virtually. There is no limit to participants here. Register today for our general assembly, we look forward to welcoming you!

We are looking forward to MSE2022!

Next week, the most important international materials science conference, MSE2022, will start in Darmstadt/hybrid. We are looking forward to many exciting talks and discussions, especially in the symposium M04 Digital Materials: Experiments, Simulation Workflows, Ontologies and Interoperabilit, in which we are significantly involved. In addition to four keynote lectures in the Audimax, there will be many talks and posters addressing modern developments around digitalization. In the entrance area of the Audimax, PMD and NFDI-MatWerk will have a booth for discussions and information. Please come by, we are looking forward to many visitors!

PMD Plenary Meeting

On March, 17th 2022, the platform MaterialDigital will hold its first plenary meeting for the entire community (plenary meeting will be in German)! Join us and learn more about the current status of the MaterialDigital platform and its already connected projects. During our breakout sessions on the topics of ontologies, workflows and community, you can actively participate and discuss working issues with us. To collect relevant topics from the community, you can share topics and questions in advance in our forum. We look forward to your involvement and participation, the PMD Team

Dear Platform MaterialDigital Community,

The year is coming to an end. Time to pause and look back. A lot has happened at the platform in the past year and we have made a lot of progress in all areas.

The community is growing and we welcomed our academic projects to the platform in spring. One by one, the projects have started their work and are getting more and more involved with the platform. Within PMD, we have expanded our working groups and have now established a community working group in addition to workflows, ontology and IT architecture. All working groups have an area in the forum and will report news, discussions, ideas and comments with you.

It's christmas time

The DGM has a digital advent calendar on its site again this year. We from MaterialDigital were allowed to open the advent calendar with a contribution. In the first door we show how Christmasy our ontology of the tensile test can be. Have we made you curious? Then take a look.

MaterialDigital platform: Driver of digitalization in material science

In July 2019, KIT launched the innovation platform MaterialDigital in cooperation with six scientific institutions across Germany. With the initialization of the platform, the cooperation partners aim to establish a material data space as well as uniform standards in material digitalization. An interim report.

Digitalisation in the field of materials science and materials engineering and in consequence the platform MaterialDigital are met with more and more interest. The community is growing steadily. More than 1000 people are now registered on our website, which we are continuously revising and extending. In this newsletter we would like to give you an outlook on possible connection points with the platform as well as a summary of past events.

Call for contributions for special issue on Virtual Materials Design

Virtual materials development is an emerging field that aims at the provision of digital twins that can be connected in a modular library in powerful workflows. Such workflows need to combine different computational methods for different scales such as DFT calculations on the quantum level, MD simulations on the atomistic level and FEM on the continuum scale, and have to run on a wide spectrum of computer applications from mobile phones to high-performance computers.

Dear Platform MaterialDigital community, We hope you have all had a good start to the new year. 2021 is an exciting year for the MaterialDigital platform, not only because of the new BMBF projects currently starting, but also because of a new call for proposals within the funding programme. In addition, one of the member institutes of our consortium is celebrating an anniversary. Enclosed we give you an overview of current developments at PMD.

150 years of BAM, we congratulate!

BAM, one of our consortium institutes, is celebrating its 150th anniversary and we, as the MaterialDigital platform, extend our warmest congratulations. As one of the oldest material science institutes in Germany, BAM has not only had a strong influence on the material sciences, it is also still at the forefront when it comes to ushering the material sciences into the digital age. As part of the 150th anniversary, there will be a symposium on 4 March from 15:30-17:30 on the topic of "Trust in future technologies". Relate material data: Designing data structures, integrating data islands

On 3 March 2021, the Workshop MaterialDigital format will be continued virtually on a smaller scale. Experts from industry and academia will address the questions of how materials data and information from different sources and of varying nature and quality can be related to each other and which hurdles have to be overcome in the process. The objectives are to improve the informative value of materials data for assessing the functionality and performance of materials and components, to reduce the effort and the need for new data to be generated or to create completely new bases for decision-making. And ultimately, this integration of data and data islands should not remain a one-off action, but should be transformed into a value-added process. Dear Platform MaterialDigital community, an extraordinary year is coming to an end, in which special challenges had to be mastered for all of us, including us as PMD team. This year, many hardworking hands were involved (most of them virtually) in the development of the platform MaterialDigital (PMD) and were able to achieve a lot despite some challenges and a large number of construction sites. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their work and efforts. At the end of the year, we would like to give you an overview of what we have worked on this year and how it will continue in 2021.

Further education on ontologies

Ontologies play a central role in digitization. But what do we mean by ontologies, how are they structured, why are they so important?For a better understanding of these and other questions, we recommend a Lecture on Knowledge Graphs from FIZ Karlsruhe to all users. The lecture is free of charge and in English.If you only want to learn more about ontologies, you can access the following links.

QPTDat Workshop FAIR Research Data in Plasma Medicine.

On October 28 to 29, 2020, the BMBF-funded joint project Quality assurance and linking of research data in plasma technology - QPTDat hosts the virtual workshopFAIR Research Data in Plasma Medicine.The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers in the field of plasma medicine with research data management experts to discuss requirements and possibilities for research data management in accordance with the FAIR principles.

CCDC/FIZ Webevent

A second joint interactive session is planned for October 7th, where the FIZ will discuss your requirements and priorities for a common interface that will enable advanced searches and other services across both databases. The joint interactive session is planned as an open, guided discussion to gather your requirements and identify some use cases that will help us prioritize the development of the required functionality.

Survey and Webinar: Searching across the ICSD and CSD

Since mid-2018, the CCDC and FIZ Karlsruhe have been offering the crystallographic community a joint depot, which standardizes the deposit of crystal structures for inorganic and organic structures. Scientists currently find further information on many crystallographic structures in the two cured databases Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) which will be currently linked to the common repository, so that users can be directed to the two databases for further information.

Dear users of the MaterialDigital platform, A lot has happened worldwide in the last few months. The MaterialDigital platform (PMD) was also surprised by the Corona pandemic and as a result switched its cross-organizational working methods to a virtual working environment. Despite the difficult conditions, we are pleased with what we have been able to achieve since then: The PMD is taking on more and more shape. Enclosed we give you an overview of our highlights. Information on the PMD's approach, its organisation, upcoming projects and a survey on behalf of NFDI-MatWerk.

Active participation at the information workshop MaterialDigital on the 09.01.2020

At the headquarters of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin-Steglitz, an information workshop on the "MaterialDigital" call for proposals initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) took place on 09.01.2020. The information workshop was attended by 200 representatives from numerous university and non-university research institutions that intend to participate in the open call for proposals.
